Australia Road Pedestrian Space

Closed 7 Mar 2014

Opened 14 Feb 2014

Overview

In response to local requests the council is considering improvements to part of Australia Road and has developed a concept highway design, converting the area outside Randolph Beresford Early Years Centre into a pedestrian space.

The section of Australia Road outside Randolph Beresford Early Years Centre has been identified by the local community as a suitable site for a pedestrian space, because it links the school with two playgrounds and it is used by the community for the annual White City Festival.

The pedestrian space will be created by closing the southern section of Australia Road between India Way and Canada Way to motor vehicles, allowing the space to be a safe environment for pedestrians and cyclists. Emergency vehicles will be allowed access.

The council is now proceeding with the next stage of this project to further develop the design.

The proposed design includes:

  • A 6m wide paved route through the site which will be utilised as event space and provide a wide shared-use boulevard for cyclists and pedestrians. The paving will be permeable allowing rainwater to naturally flow into the ground.
  • A piazza (like a market square) to hold school and community events.
  • Retention basins  -planted gardens or grassed areas that can hold water during periods of rain and reduce the risk of flooding.
  • Overhead channels to transport rainwater from the school to the retention basins.
  • A balance wall in one of the retention basins will be a children’s play feature.
  • A new gate into the playground on Australia Road.
