Reducing traffic and improving safety around Harwood Terrace

Closed 15 Mar 2019

We’re proposing to make some changes to reduce through-traffic in your area, reduce road danger, improve the environment, and make your neighbourhood more pleasant.

A recent traffic survey highlighted a high number of vehicles travelling through Harwood Terrace to reach King’s Road. The traffic is avoiding the traffic lights at the junction of Bagleys Lane with King’s Road.

A further study looking at collision numbers for King’s Road and New King’s Road has shown that the junctions of Edith Row and Waterford Road with King’s Road have a high number of collisons, especially involving cyclists.

Our proposed changes

To address these issues, we’d like your views on the following proposed changes.

We’d like to:

  • Close Harwood Terrace at the junction with Imperial Road to traffic. Access will be retained for emergency vehicles and cyclists. The closure will be implemented by installing two lockable bollards, as shown on the attached plan.
  • Install three refuge islands along Imperial Road to improve crossing facilities for pedestrians.

Will these changes be permanent ?

We would use an experimental traffic order to make the changes on Harwood Terrace and will monitor the results for approximately six months. We’ll then ask residents for feedback on the scheme before deciding whether to make these changes permanent.

We'd only make the scheme permanent if feedback from residents supported it.
